Errol Flynn was certainly the most lustrous star of Hollywood’s “Golden Age”, with a devil-may-care drag hiding the insecurities of an discouraged childhood, reckless lifestyle, and desperate desire to conclude respect as an actor, and not fair a swashbuckler in tights. Flynn could be sweet and courteous, an arrogant bully, a roue and bon vivant, a restless adventurer, a proper friend, or an unreliable “royal harm”, depending on who you spoke to (and when) . His sexual exploits were legendary, as were his capacities for alcohol and drugs (all of which were truly much, considering the awful health he endured throughout his life, despite his robust on-screen appearance) . Ultimately, whether you loved or hated his lifestyle, his film work, during nearly eighteen years under contract to Warner Brothers, includes some of the most amazing, bewitching classics ever made, and his charisma continues to enchant audiences!

Sadly, few of Flynn’s films have appeared, thus far, on DVD (the best being a respectable “Adventures of Robin Hood” DVD, released last year) . This novel collection, while a mixed bag, does finally give DVD audiences a chance to relish two signature Flynn performances, in “Captain Blood” (his breakthrough starring role) and “The Sea Hawk” (one of the greatest swashbucklers ever made) . The rest of the collection lacks the luster of these films, but are certainly worthwhile; “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” teams Flynn with Bette Davis (who despised him, and fought to gather Laurence Olivier for Essex), and, with “The Sea Hawk”, shows Flynn playing opposite two very different interpretations of Queen Elizabeth; “They Died with Their Boots On”, Raoul Walsh’s fanciful biopic of George Armstrong Custer, offers a slam-bang, if mistaken, version of the Cramped Huge Horn, and the last teaming of Flynn and his accepted leading lady, Olivia de Havilland (“Captain Blood” was their first of eight films together) ; “Dodge City” represented a major gamble, as Warners had no understanding if audiences would acquire Tasmanian Flynn as a cowboy in the Musty West (they did, and Flynn would manufacture seven more westerns, over the next ten years…actually making more westerns than swashbucklers or war movies!) . While I’d have preferred seeing “The Dawn Patrol”, “The Adventures of Don Juan”, and “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, in this collection, the choice of films does prove Flynn at his most gloriously glorious!

Best of all, TCM has produced “The Adventures of Errol Flynn”, a long-overdue biography, which is included in the package. Along with interviews with his family and friends, including extensive interviews with de Havilland, wives Patrice Wymore and Nora Eddington (in archival footage), and daughter Deirdre, it offers ‘behind-the-scenes’ footage, private home movies, and material never before seen by the public (including footage from the never-completed “William Bid”), which makes this a ‘must’ for Flynn fans.

While it will probably be years before all of Errol Flynn’s films near DVD, this collection offers an pleasurable introduction to a upright Hollywood “Novel”, and is well worth owning!

Okay, here it is. Strait up. I treasure Errol Flynn. Always have, always will. Can’t remember which of his films I saw first on television years ago (though my slight grey brain cells maintain whispering “They Died With Their Boots On”), but whatever it was, it made me instantly a Flynn junkie and I have remained so ever since. It is hard to say which of the “Tasmanian Devil’s” movies I like the best, though I’m inclined to hold it is a toss-up between “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “The Charge of the Light Brigade” (this awesome film amazingly MISSING from this “signature” collection…and it’s unfathomable absence the priciple reason I have rated this collection as only 4 stars instead of 5) . How does one have an Errol Flynn “signature” collection with “Charge of the Light Brigade” so glaringly unincluded? Boggles the mind. One would hope Turner Classics would develop a “Volume II” to this, a follow-up that would feature “Light Brigade”, “The Dawn Patrol”, “Gentleman Jim”,”Adventures of Don Juan”, and one of Joanne Woodward’s favorites, “That Forsyte Woman” from MGM (or else “Perilous Glory” or “Edge of Darkness”) .

It is fine to peruse Flynn coming wait on “In” again (to play on the aged “In like…” expression) . He took a major hit some two decades ago with a most worthless book that became a bestseller (“The Secret Life of Errol Flynn” by Charles Higham ) and smeared his name and reputation mean-spiritedly. This author, Higham, termed Flynn a traitor and Nazi watch and pedophile homosexual, supposedly using “credible” inspect tesitimony and “classified documentation” to bolster his base claims. He had Flynn doing all sorts of things to further the cause of the Reich and zigzag him up with secret meetings all across Europe and in the Caribbean with his “Nazi intelligence controllers”. Among his claims were that Errol conventional his influence to have secret aerial shots of Pearl Harbor filmed during the production of “Dive Bomber”, which he funnelled to German Intelligence (“Abwehr”), and thence to the Japanese to succor thought their attack.

He also had Flynn at a secret nazi confab in the Bahamas with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and other British traitors. These were only two “for instances” of this kind of thing. Then he had Flynn “peruse controlled” by Dr. Julius Erben, a low-level Abwehr agent….with documents (supposedly) to “indicate” it.

In short order, all Higham’s claims came crashing down in the face of Sincere research by Genuine researchers digging up Dependable facts.

All the times Higham had Flynn meeting with “Nazis” in Europe, he could not have done so, as all the Warner Brothers’ shooting logs tranquil exist and Flynn’s whereabouts can be tracked meticulously. Higham hadn’t counted on that when he began his smear campaign. In fact, on the very day when Highman had Errol “conspiring” in the Bahamas with the Windsors, the actor was, in fact, standing on a log across a stream in Chico. California, facing Alan Hale with a quarterstaff while William Keighly directed the meeting of Robin Hood and Miniature John for “The Adventures of…”. And, as for “Dive Bomber”, the Japanese ALREADY HAD their Pearl Harbor mockups built (courtesy of Honolulu spies) and were preparing for the raid WHILE “DIVE BOMBER” WAS IN PRODUCTION….AT SAN DIEGO…NOT PEARL HARBOR!!!!

Situations like this…CONNIVANCES….turned up everywhere in the Higham book. And the “documentation” he offered turned out to be edited out of context, and, in some cases, the blacked out names didn’t record to Flynn at all…Higham impartial CLAIMED they did. But originals obtained under the Freedom of Information Act proved the distortions here as well. And Dr. Erben? Well he WAS a German agent, but he only knew Flynn briefly, and, interviewed before his death, he affirmed that Errol had NEVER been a German agent, that he…Erben…had extinct Flynn’s celebrity to catch him access to people, but that Flynn himself never realized he was being old-fashioned in this manner. It should also be illustrious that the Abwehr, under Adm. Wilhelm Canaris, worked secretly more AGAINST Hitler’s Nazis than FOR them. aided in the assassination plots AGAINST Hitler, and, by war’s slay, had been disbanded and taken over by the SS and its leaders executed. In fact there is strong reason to beget Abwehr may have been half-connected to the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. So even if Flynn might have UNKNOWINGLY been “associated” with this ANTI-Nazi German intelligence organization, that might not have been such a dreadful thing after all!

As to the homosexual pedophile stuff, none other than Flynn’s veteran arch-enemy BETTE DAVIS stepped forward to state that a “crock”. Said that sounded like Orry-Kelly malarkey, Orry-Kelly being a Warner’s costumer in “the day”. According to Davis, Kelly jubilant in spreading outrageous, vicious, hurtful rumors about people who “crossed him”…and Errol did that from time to time.

To have “Queen Bette” the Flynn-hater reach to his defense was wonderful enough, but then the OTHER shoe dropped. JOAN CRAWFORD, Bette Davis’ Bear arch enemy, came out BACKING BETTE!!! Crawford, who’d once called Flynn “The most splendid man who ever lived”, said the gratified stories sounded EXACTLY like something that would reach out of Orry-Kelly; that if you’d ever worked at Warners you’d have picked up on it immediately.

An wonderful happening. Bette Davis defending Errol Flynn and Joan Crawford backing her up. Shades of the Apocalypse.

Though now totally discredited among those who KNOW, many uninformed people unruffled are under the impression this hog swill was legal. It all needs to be plot moral. The DVD “Adventures of Errol Flynn” in this collection attacks the feeble epic, Tony Thomas in “Errol Flynn, The Gape Who Never Was”, demolishes it handily, as does Flynn’s stunt double Buster Wiles in “Errol & Me”. The Walt Disney movie “The Rocketeer” unhappily plays with the smear job, featuring Timothy Dalton made up as Flynn (though called “Neville Sinclair”) and casts him as the dastardly villain Charles Higham worked so to obtain him appear(and the “why” of it has never been learned) . I am a fan of the “Rocketeer” movie but this aspect of it has always distressed me.

But it looks like Errol’s turn is coming around again. This “Signature Collection” puts him center stage again and he deserves the limelight. “Elizabeth & Essex” lets him act, and “The Adventures of…” outlines his life. But “Captain Blood”, “The Sea Hawk”, “They Died With Their Boots On” and “Dodge City” explain perfectly what it was he did…and how he did it…that let him charm America and the world.

As a French Novel Wave director, Jean-Luc Godard (1930) was at the head of his class. Drawing from politics, film history, French intellectualism, existential and Marxist philosophy, Godard’s radical films challenged the conventions of Hollywood cinema and influenced French cinema. Breathless (1960) is among his most accessible films. With all the energy of a 1940s’ American gangster B-movie, it tells the simple sage of Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a French petty street thief, who steals a car and kills a policeman, while at the same time pursuing a naive American girl Patricia (Jean Seberg) . She is wary of Michel’s intentions and questions his lack of ambition, but proving that nice girls have a thing for terrible boys, Patricia spends time with him in Paris before turning him in to the police. Using faded editing techniques, handheld cameras, and a musical soundtrack that seems out of sync with the action, Godard succeeds at constantly reminding his audience that his film is an artificial reality having exiguous to do with steady reality. Although the film’s location is thin, Breathless revolutionized French cinema. Of his films, Bande à allotment (also called Band of Outsiders – Criterion Collection) (1966) remains my Godard current and should not be missed.

The recent dual-disc Criterion upgraded edition of Breathless includes a restored high-definition digital transfer (celebrated by director of photography Raoul Coutard), interviews with Godard, and actors Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, video essays: filmmaker and critic Ticket Rappaport’s “Jean Seberg” and critic Jonathan Rosenbaum’s “Breathless as Film Criticism,” an eighty-minute French documentary about the making of Breathless, with members of the cast and crew, the French theatrical trailer, and a booklet featuring writings from Godard, film historian Dudley Andrew, Francois Truffaut’s new film treatment, and Godard’s scenario.

François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette and Eric Rohmer were film connoisseurs, who all worked as movie critics for the same magazine. Between the years 1958 to 1964, this group transitioned into filmmaking, and, along with other directors, such as Agnés Varda, Jean-Pierre Melville and Louis Malle, ushered in the French Original Wave Movement, (Nouvelle Vague) . Their background in film theory and criticism was a major factor in motivating these artists to gain a heroic novel cinema.

Jean-Luc Godard’s first feature, “Breathless,” was released in 1960, introducing the Original Wave and changing cinema forever. Godard dilapidated jump cuts, handheld cameras, zoom lenses and a original editing style to remove the viewer places never ventured before. No artificial, glossy stage sets in this movie. Along with the protagonists, we fade up and down minute side streets, into local bars and sidewalk cafes, across boulevards and, for inconsequential moments, brush the lives of passers-by, who have nothing to do with the screenplay, but always play a role in our daily comings and goings. The fragmented rhythm of unique life is translated here. Godard obsolete sound in the same device, adding street noises, bits of conversations and music to add to the movie’s authenticity and wobble. This was indeed innovative at the time. And it unruffled holds up. Watching “Breathless” forty-five years after its debut, 21st century technology does not detract from its dynamism or relevance in the slightest. In fact, with each viewing, I obtain the film every bit as intelligent and poignant as I did the first time.

Jean-Paul Belmondo plays the feckless, foul-mouthed car thief, anti-hero and Humphrey Bogart fan, Michel Poiccard. Impartial a few minutes after the opening credits carry out, Michel’s spot changes from small-time hood to cop killer. His life’s plans alter drastically as he becomes a hunted fugitive. Michel remains chilly enough, however, to visit an stale girlfriend and hold some money. Bogart would have been proud – not of the theft, but of the style. Michel spots gamine-like American, Patricia Franchini, (the resplendent Jean Seberg), selling copies of the Herald Tribune on the Champs-Elysees, and pursues her, with naughty smiles and short-tempered pouts. He curses her and moves off rapid, though, when she gives him a hard time. He likes his women more alive to. Instead of getting out of town rapid, Michel hangs with fellow thugs and steals more cars.

Patricia is an enigmatic character, who occasionally startles with her observations and revelations. Twenty years-old, with the naive face of an angel, she seems to have no direction or goals in life. She studies at the Sorbonne and says she wants to write, but is oddly tranquil. She shuns commitment. She does occasional exclusive jobs for the newspaper, but appears to live in a dream world. Of course Patricia winds up with Michel and together they gallivant around the beautiful streets of Paris, as if they haven’t a care in the world. Patricia does have at least one dilemma, however – she might be pregnant. Together the couple attempts to accumulate on a debt to raise enough cash to rush to Italy.

Godard captures incredibly intimate moments between the two lovers, particularly in one lengthy, extremely realistic bedroom episode, filled with slight talk, tenderness, petty cruelties, eroticism, mind games, childhood memories shared and loneliness. At the scene’s ruin we have a better thought of the self destructive individuals who make-up this twosome. A sense of burgeoning doom, which has hovered in the background all along, begins to increase here. Michel’s bravado also escalates with the level of anxiety and, to his credit, he remains suitable to his idol, Bogart, to the waste. The conclusion boggles the mind, at least it has always impacted me emotionally in a major design.

Belmondo is shiny as the restless thief, in this, his first film role. He reminds me of a French James Dean. Seberg is convincing and unique. This is a dynamic film, witty, fast-paced, romantic and disturbing. It has long been a current of mine.

I am a original fan. I never heard of Paul Mooney until he started showing up on Chappeles’ Present, and Howard Stern. I immediately became a fan. Edgy and loaded with expansive observations about urge in America, this DVD hits the brand. I am white and am no method offended by what he says. I reflect there are severe differences with color and delight in someone that does not cover late the PC police to shroud that up.

If I have one complaint it’s the fact that the stand up routine is often times interrupted with other comics telling us, the viewer, what a genius Paul Mooney is. I don’t know why they would make it like that. I would rather impartial have the routine uncut. I could care less what Sandra Bernhard has to say about him.

Mooney has a spacious intention to bid stories that are droll, but construct you believe. I like the fact that it’s not all white people dance laughable jokes. He dishes it out to his absorb people as well. I have always been a colossal fan of humor that is also topical and means something, I have been a Carlin fan for years and I like Lewis Dim. Discovering Paul Mooney has made me savor Stand-Up Comedy again.

If this was an early sixties modern vinyl describe by Bill Cosby, I’d have old-fashioned it out last night. If this was a video tape, it would be shredded by now. As soon as it came in the mail yesterday I slipped it into the box

and ran it, over and over all night. It is that wonderful. He is that poor.

Hear it. Hear it deep. Like a blues song he keeps coming help to one bass accelerate underneath it all: “We have all gone crazy. We have to approach home to Christ. It is all over.” Like a proud, apt, strong country preacher, like an conventional jazz song, Mr. Mooney returns to his hook, his chorus line to repeat: “We have all gone stone crazy. We have got to near home to Christ. It is all over.” Mr. Mooney knows how to enjoy his audience, like a strong preacher or teacher (even though he has a lot of keen and despicable and scary things to say about teachers here) . Mr. Mooney keeps asking the audience easy questions that everyone knows the acknowledge to, and which he too must know, as an radiant and a wise man; but he pulls the audience in and keeps it engaged seeking his approval and recognition by asking it easy questions, such as the name of the white boy who ripped launch Janet Jackson’s blouse at the Superbowl. Mr. Mooney points out Justin wanted to dance dismal and stammer shadowy, but after exposing Ms. Jackson he lickety-split turned white again and blamed the victim. “I’m appalled!” This is rich, and very silly and in the middle of a colossal Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and Michael Jackson DIVA bit. By the method he declares Michael innocent though “X-Files” in a strong and a reasonable intention, as that man does not even select off his gloves.

Towards the climax of his preaching, Mr. Mooney turns towards the Scientologists in every procedure he can arrive them, as revenge for South Park’s silencing. He even hits the Dark ones like Isaac Hayes and Forest Whitaker (really? I didn’t know. There is remarkable here which, if it is not actually proper ought to be proper because it’s grand funnier that contrivance, including the title) . He points out how the Scientologists wait for the Mothership to net them, but for some it’ll be another slave ship. Then he explains like a safe strong preacher why people want to jump on the notice modern and latest thing, saying as his grandmother in Louisiana taught him “A current broom might sweep but the outmoded broom knows where the dirt is.” Mr. Mooney points out people felt constricted by the Ten Commandments and looked for something else that lets them “be themselves”. He specifically begins with Thou shalt not demolish and then counts off others: Thou shalt not covet your neighbor’s wife and Thou shalt not choose. This is the climax of his speechifying as he tells us all once again Thou shalt not waste. In his long and fruitful and gallant life he has seen too many beneficial ones go.

He has considerable that’s really amusing to say about Bush and Condaleeza and about Oprah and Martha and even Hillary, whose courage he admires. She was the only one to stand up and train a minute bit of truth in the middle of all of the madness and he loves that.

He tears Hollywood’s hypocrisy apart, and the gentrification of Harlem (“North Manhattan) . He gets to the heart and soul of what is sick in America, and it is so apt to hear that proud strong notify from the Sixties calm rolling. He sounds like a Dusky Pride/Black Power preacher coming to town to spread the beneficial Word. Hear this proud Sad Man. He does the cops, and the long standing profiling of Blacks: “Are you on probation or parole? Does this owner of this automobile know that you have it? ” He does everyone, even the Africans. He does the Great and Hollywood’s counterfeit heroics, and he does Denny’s, to a turn. If Denny’s does not want Dim people, why cater to them? Honest turn off the heating.

He is gleaming, and gifted and the only one left to hear. I wore this disk out like an early Cosby vinyl album, or a Pryor tape, which Mooney probably wrote. Mooney wrote most of the ample comedy for thirty years now. Hear him now. He is the last expansive stand-up comedian collected standing.

My only objection: Fire the editor. I stopped watching and impartial started listening, like an former comedy album, and it was better perceive unseen, without all of the many cuts to the audience, all of the cuts from a camera in a girl’s lap looking up at her face. They had a tremendous camera terminate up to reveal all of his physical expressions and motions, suitable on the correct side of his head, to bag all of his strong expressions and acting talent and broad arm gestures, all of his strong physicality which tells at least half of his stories, but the editor holds us to a wide shot from the abet of the room, like from the attend of the bus, and I couldn’t leer a thing. Time for us to advance down from the balcony and sit in the front row. Out of the cheap seats and into the orchestra!

And they kept cutting to girls in the crowd, over and over. Arresting the point at which the brightly blonde California no-longer-a-girl got up with her date and walked out on Mr. Mooney and his well-behaved humor, and Mr. Mooney loves it. I also could have worn less interruption from Sarah Bernhardt and some guy named Shawn Ullman (Tracy’s grandson? Liv’s? ), whom they edit Correct IN THE MIDDLE OF MR. MOONEY’S ACT, BREAKING HIS RHYTHM. Sarah’s never had remarkable of anything to say, and she says it worse than ever here, and in the middle of Mr. Mooney’s finest moments. Achieve that for the extra material, please, elsewhere on the DVD; don’t nick it into the main display, which is intellectual and must be heard tidy and honest! This is really silly stuff and mild strong after all these years, even when he runs out of material or energy and starts reciting mature jokes. Hear this man. You will be retelling those same mature jokes yourself at work tomorrow. Especially the genie ones.

Hear this American Man! All America must hear this disk and be healed. What he says about the archaic and the recent Pope is enormous. Being from Louisiana he has a Catholic focus, and sees all the diagram through it. He calls for a Murky Pope if only because no one else can carry off wearing that cape and cane and jewelry. Hear this man. On the Middle East, on North Korea, on Bush’s gas prices (LA gangs cannot afford to do drive bys anymore) I am forgetting so mighty after a long week of repeated viewing, to which it stands up well. What other comedy album since Cosby and Pryor can you play over and over again but this one?

It is sparkling and it must be heard for our beget healing and peace. Peace and reconciliation. Hear this man now. Hear this man. Don’t miss this point to. Hear him again. He was always the most gleaming fraction of the Chappelle DVD’s with the complete out takes from his proudly outraged steaming Ask a Sunless Man piece, where he spoke with utmost gravity and seriousness the most truthful and absurd things together, until cracking up and you realize he was putting you on the whole time as a mammoth dead-pan comedian with Buster Keaton’s solemn face. This man is America’s last and greatest living Comedian. Hear this man, today!

Many people who saw the slick and stylish Scorcese creation Color of Money didn’t even realize that Eddie Felson already existed on the silver veil in The Hustler. What many people yelp me when they get out and peruse The Hustler is that either they hated it or loved it. That’s because while Color of Money is composed, slick, collected, and polished, The Hustler is raw, biting, and considerable and so by definition it is not for everyone. Color of Money is more about visual effects and music, which is classic Scorcese, though there’s no staunch substance. Scorcese himself has said in interviews that movies like Goodfellas were conclude to his heart, but Color of Money was honest a commercialized creation.

The Hustler, on the other hand, really grabs you. First off, as a pool player myself, let me stutter you Tom Waft can’t play pool worth a damn, and that lack of authenticity is a glaring weakness to launch with. But objective the fact that Newman and Gleason can play pool does not earn The Hustler a better movie – it’s a masterpiece because it is a enthralling legend of human redepmption, of Eddie’s battle to separate his pool game from his self-esteem. It’s also about one man’s passion for the game. How can any pool player forget that soliloquoy by Snappy Eddie when he and Sarah go for that picnic, how he talks about how he loves even unbiased the sound of the click of the balls, how the cue has nerves in it and is piece of his arm!

Remember that last scene in Color of Money, where young cocky Vincent plays the older, cagier Expeditiously Eddie and Eddie declares “I’m abet” before he breaks the balls? Even though the movie ends there, everyone knows Eddie wiped up the floor with Vincent. Vincent’s character had talent, but Eddie had character, and that’s what beat Snappily Eddie time he played Fats.

And that’s the plot the two movies are too. Color of Money has talent, but The Hustler has character.

The Hustler spotlights one of Paul Newman’s finest performances in his portrayal of Posthaste Eddie Felson, an arrogant, amoral pool hustler who’s definite to be the greatest pool player in the country by beating the legendary Minnesota Fats (played flawlessly by Jackie Gleason) .

The film is a gritty, uncompromising character perceive and tragic appreciate myth that is place in the world of pool hustlers. Piper Laurie; as an alcoholic floozy who falls hard for Hasty Eddie; and George C. Scott as the wintry hearted manipulative gambler, Bert Gordon,– contribute two additional flawless supporting performances. It was directed by the controversial Robert (All the King’s Men) Rossen (he resisted but eventually named names during the substandard blacklist of the 50′s) .

The film focuses on the arrogant, unsympathetic exploits of a con man as he uses his charm, looks and pool playing skills to hustle enough money to challenge Minnesota Fats, only to be humiliated in defeat. As ‘Fast Eddie’ attempts to raise money for a re-match, he meets and almost falls in savor with Sarah a fellow alcoholic. At first Rapidly Eddie refuses to be managed by Bert Gordon, but after a pool hall hustle ends up with Snappily Eddie having his thumbs broken, he reconsiders. Before the re-match with Minnesota Fats, a warm up high stakes game in Louisville has tragic consequences.

The film dares to focus on a-typical anti-hero characters who live by amoral codes. Very limited Hollywood style gloss is to be found anywhere in this stylistic gritty masterpiece which harm up being nominated for 10 Academy Awards (West Side Yarn won most of them that year) . Cinematographer Eugene Shufftan deservedly won an Oscar for his moodily lit, fair dismal and white images. Harry Horner’s and Gene Callahan’s intricately art direction, production create and situation decoration were also awarded with Oscars. Pool yarn Willie Mosconi taught Newman how to contemplate and act the allotment of a pool hustler and also made Newman’s trick shots in the film. Jackie Gleason was already an great pool player. There really was an Aames pool hall in Recent York City and it is old-fashioned for the film’s most riveting scenes. Boxer Jake LaMotta (of ‘Raging Bull’ fame) plays a bartender in the film.

Director Rossen who began his career as a screenwriter made only one other film (1964′s Lilith) after ‘The Hustler’. Rossen died in 1966. Martin Scorcese directed the 1986 sequel Color of Money, with Newman reprising his Expeditiously Eddie role (and this time Newman won a best Actor Oscar for his efforts) as he teaches an up and coming hustler (Tom Coast) the ropes. The sequel doesn’t near conclude to being as obliging as the unique (despite its stylistic flourishes, cast and director) .

Interesting to impress that the characters in The Hustler were fictitious and an above average pool player legally changed his name to Minnesota Fats AFTER the film was released. The loyal life ‘Minnesota Fats’ eventually played a nationally televised (hosted by Howard Cosell) pool exhibition with William Mosconi in the 1970′s more than 10 years after this 1961 film.

DVD IMAGE AND SOUND

The film has been digitally re-mastered in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. The films looks to be in pleasurable shape with very exiguous print distress observed. The gawk of the film is smoky and gritty and the shadow details are rich indicating strong dismal levels exhibit. This is a very attractive looking dim and white film. The sound will not trace but the dialogue, sound effects and occasional music is crisp and usually centered..

DVD EXTRA’S

In addition to two trailers for the film, there are a few lively featurettes some production stills and the edifying commentary track.

Richard Schickel hosts the too short documentary The Hustler: The Inside Sage which gives us some details on how the film came to be made, and delivers some we were there stories from some of the film-makers and a few surprise guests.

“How to Accomplish the Shot,” and “Trick Shot Analysis by World Artistic Champion, Mike Massey”

are two shorts demonstrating and showing viewers how to do some trick shots on the pool table.

There is a noble commentary track which features the reminisces, and perspectives from actors: Paul Newman, and Stefan Gierash (Preacher), Dede Allen (film editor), Ulu Grosbard (assistant director), Carol Rossen (the director’s daughter), Richard Schickel (film critic, Time), and Jeff Young (film historian) . The comments camouflage all aspects of the making of the film. Newman’s comments as one might ask are few.

The film looks and sounds immense, the extras compliment the classic film very well. Along with Hud, and Nobody’s Fool, The Hustler has, what for me, is one of the three best Newman performances on film. Considering the supporting cast are generous, there’s exiguous for anyone to fault with this film.

Christopher J. Jarmick, is the author of The Glass Cocoon with Serena F. Holder a critically acclaimed, steamy suspense thriller…

This is far and above the absolute best Film Movements film in the series. I haven’t seen or heard a film this well done in a very long time. Grasp or rent this film.

The opening scene sets the tone of this film. We observe a man pruning trees. The only sound we hear is the sound of his saw cutting the thin young branches. The last sound we hear is the click of a branch breaking off, but don’t contemplate that branch shatter. The scene is very gray, overcast sky, and in the winter. It is a metaphor for the rest of the film.

So many films initiate with a particular style, something different. It catches your gape or your ears or your mind. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the design through they lose that style and return to the same faded melodrama we’ve all seen before. Not this film. That sound, the sparse definite perfectly recorded sound works throughout this film. The gray skies, the amazing framing, the perfect editing, those play all the map to the raze of Fraulein. There was a fresh style all the design to the kill of the film.

This is the chronicle of two women. Ana has left Sarejvo after the war. Ruza is the owner of a very gray working man’s restaurant (cafeteria would be more like it) . The two meet in Ruza’s, aptly named simply “Restaurant.”

This is a share of Zurich no tourist has ever seen. It overlooks the city we all know along the lake. This is the working dwelling of Zurich. If I were to characterize more of this film, it would kill the discovery process primary to the anecdote line and enjoyment.

I don’t want to oversell this film. It’s a mighty itsy-bitsy film that was done on a very vulgar budget. It demonstrates that wonderful stories and an fabulous film style do not require millions of dollars to film. I was astounded by the clarity of sound, and how it was almost another character. I was surprised by the extraordinary perfomances of these two women. I felt like I got to know them both well. And was amazed at the camera work and framing.

If you’re familiar with the Film Movement series, you will admire this film. If not, then this might unprejudiced be the introduction you need to launch watching very ravishing modern cinema from around the world.

By the map – Happiness, the short that accompanies Fraulein, is the best one they have ever bundled. It’s about an older woman that is a quality control inspector at a condom factory.

really enjoyed this movie. good work by all interested. Mirjana Karanovic gives a broad performance

I have seen this film before. But i want to ogle this film in blu ray. And result very honorable quality and voices.

I like the Rambo series of movies. Let’s face it, in all of the movies the Rambo character is preposterous at best. If the fantasy fighter thing doesn’t turn you away, then go with it. I assume Sylvester got a abominable rap along the plan and did not obtain all of his due as an actor and his ability to entertain. Hokey yes, but smooth a reliable movie.

Every review I’ve read has been quasi-negative but not being one to listen to critics, I took a chance. I was very pleasantly surprised. Depending on why you go to a movie, you may not like this because it is not escapism. It deals with right life issues and things most of us can record to. I found the movie to be very refreshing and all the characters steady to life. The main character is a single mom trying to raise a precocious son. She has to deal with a dead-end relationship and an aging father, an irresponsible sister and a job she hates. How she copes and what she does is more believable than most of the “chick flick” films out today. I believe this is one of the better movies in a sea of fluff to employ time and money on. Amy Adams is extraordinary and it is always refreshing to gape Alan Arkin. Please don’t dismiss this film because of iffy reviews. It is worth going to gape.

A very scrumptious quirky film which is after alot more then hastily easy laughs. This film gets pleasing serious at times and what an luscious waddle it is made easier by the stellar cast. Amy Adams as Rose and her sister Norah, Emily Blunt, tend to Rose’s 7 year broken-down son, Oscar and their maintain cleaning business they are starting. This is no ordinary cleaning business but a crime scene desirable up after the bodies have been moved and evidence secured and all that remains are the blood and the remanants of the deceased’s life. What I loved about this film is the humanity of the characters, precise people, proper problems and staunch situations that have you pulling for them even as you shake your head at their mistakes. Alan Arkin is a joy as the cranky, scheming father of Rose and Norah, he is at a area as an actor that he brings so distinguished of what you examine from him as an actor while also bringing such subtle differences to all his characters that you never feel you’re seeing the same character you might’ve seen in another movie. Amy Adams is a smart revelation of eternal optimism and she has you pulling for her as she tries procure over her hold demons. Emily Blunt and Jason Spevak as Oscar are wonderfully laughable and genuine. There is a loyal honesty amidst some outrageously laughable stuff that never panders or lectures and never cheats the audience. I only felt cheated at the extinguish when the movie ended. I wasn’t ready to leave this family slack and wanted to live with them a itsy-bitsy longer. That is a superb thing when a movie leaves you wanting more.

Fantoma’s DVD release of Mario Bava’s Hercules in the Center of the Earth ought to elevate his stature in the film world, if not as a “serious” movie director, then certainly as one of the cinema’s most talented and artistic lighting cameramen/cinematographers. The anecdote is fairly generic muscleman stuff and the acting is competent if unexceptional (although three-time Mr. Universe Reg Park definitely has a believable physical presence as Hercules) ; what really sets this movie apart from virtually any other peplum flick are Bava’s neon-hued Technicolor visuals, which at times border on the hallucinatory. Throughout most of the movie he tosses off shot after splendid shot, many only a few seconds long, nearly every one impeccably lit, artfully smooth, and accented with vibrant color. Bava’s interweaving of light, shadow, color, and sometimes literal “smoke and mirrors” to explain site, mood, and even character is consistently impressive, even more so after reading the liner notes describing how itsy-bitsy he had to work with. Icy sequences and striking set-pieces abound, including Deianira rising from her sarcophagus and floating across the room (like Lon Chaney in Son of Dracula) ; Hercules’s eerie visits with the sibyl; the psychedelic ocean vistas on the voyage to the Hesperides; Lyco (Christopher Lee) reflected in a pool of his victim’s blood; the flying ghouls rising from their slimy crypts (which must have given nightmares to the kiddie matinee crowd in 1964) ; and the climactic showdown between Hercules and Lyco, shot in an atmospheric Roman grotto. There’s almost too worthy to be pleased in a single viewing. While I’m not normally a gigantic fan of sword-and-sandal flicks (though I did study lots of them on Saturday afternoons as a kid), and I could’ve done without the `comedy relief’ character, I collected have to strongly recommend this movie not only to fans of Bava’s other movies (particularly Planet of the Vampires), but also anyone who simply appreciates breathtakingly graceful color cinematography.

Fantoma’s DVD is transferred in its new 2.35:1 aspect ratio and anamorphically enhanced, from a virtually pristine Technicolor print of the fresh Italian-language dub. There is only the lightest of speckling evident; otherwise it’s crisp and shapely, with lush, richly-saturated color, and superb disagreement and detail. Optional English subtitles are included, as well as the (continental) English-dubbed soundtrack. Unless you’re extremely subtitle-phobic, I recommend the Italian-language soundtrack with the subtitles. The English dubbing gives the film a campier, less serious tone and often renders the dialogue powerful more prosaically than the subtitles (example: Hercules’s final words to Deianira in the subtitled version, “Man’s fancy is passionate, but often inconsistent. Ours will last forever”; in the English dub, “As long as Theseus steals other men’s girls, I have nothing to anguish about.”) Unfortunately we don’t rep to hear Christopher Lee’s steady snort in either version. The DVD also includes marvelous Tim Lucas liner notes; a gallery of approximately 45 color and B&W stills, posters, and ad mats; and a comparatively rough-looking trailer, matted to about 1.66:1 and suffering from medium to heavy scratching and lining, awful color, and merely acceptable sharpness and detail. The film is broken into 16 chapter stops and the Dolby 2.0 mono sound is burly and obvious. The definitive edition of an unmercifully neglected film.

Most of the Italian Hercules movies made during the ’60s were laughable sword & sandal sagas. And so is this one. But, as directed by the huge Mario Bava, it’s also an atmospheric employ in cinematic style. The photography is broad, the special effects are innovative, and Bava uses colour as strikingly here as he did in Baron Blood. Christopher Lee makes a broad villain, too. So what if the comical storyline wanders far afield from its mythic origins? The unfamiliar flying zombies alone are worth the trace of admission.

After watching the movie by Tyler Perry, THE DIARY OF A Excited Shadowy WOMAN, I wanted to perceive all of the plays that Tyler Perry had written and acted in as well. MADEA’S CLASS REUNION was the very first play that I watched of the collection. Boy was it a salubrious introduction to a incredible collection of plays.

When I watched this play, I wasn’t expecting it to be so apt. Not only was there a lot of laughs but there was spacious gospel singing, acting, and a Christian “tonality” to the play. While the movie THE DIARY OF A Enraged Unlit WOMAN somewhat exploited this Christian tone, it didn’t do it to the degree that any of Perry’s stage plays did. Here a prostitute fights for her life with a husband who abuses her (and is a pimp), at a hotel, an elderly lady who cleans the rooms is fired by a manager who isn’t Christian but ends up becoming the manager of the hotel. I would scream you more, but you must experience this master work for yourself. I will protest you that Madea is “comic as h***, I ain’t lying” (one of her famed lines throughout the Tyler Perry series) . 5 stars.

This play is one out of all of his plays that is Hillarious, and yet more wisdom is given to the audience through such a Tallented Man in GOD. I and my sister and daughter saw this play on Mothers day 2003. We laughed until we were in tears and left with a a pounding head ache from laughing so hard. That was one of the happiest Mothers days I’ve had since February 13, 1999 when My Mother Flora Crawford took her last breath on this earth to go home and be with our Father in Heaven. Tyler Thank you for helping me to forget about the sorrow of not having a Mother Expose but remembering all of the Worship and teachings of Values and Morals she has instilled in my sisters and I, so that we will continue to do the same to our children.
